Over 60% of Mencap’s voluntary income comes from gifts left in Wills and Trusts.

These gifts allow us to be there for people with a learning disability and their families through every stage of their lives. They fund our Wills and Trusts service, the free Planning for the Future seminars and advice that gives parents and carers crucial information to plan for the future of a loved one with a learning disability.

Without the kind people who support Mencap by leaving gifts in their Wills and Trusts, many of our services just wouldn’t be able to continue.

To make sure your kind gift reaches Mencap, please include our full name, address and charity number in your Will or Trust:

  • Full Name: Royal Mencap Society

  • Address: 123 Golden Lane, London EC1Y 0RT

  • Charity Registration Number: 222377 (England and Wales) or SC041079 (Scotland).

Types of gift

There are a number of ways to remember a charity. Here we explain the 3 ways you can leave a gift in your Will or Trusts, including examples of how you can state this to ensure that we receive your kind gift.

A share of your estate

Many people choose to leave a share of their estate to charity - this can be a percentage of what is left over once loved ones are provided for or it can be any percentage you like.

As this gift is a proportion of your estate it keeps pace with inflation.

Example

I give to Royal Mencap Society of 123 Golden Lane, London EC1Y 0RT Charity Registration Number: 222377 __% [proportion of residue in words] for its general purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other duly authorised officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my Executors.

Fixed sum of money

You can choose to leave a fixed sum of money, also known as a pecuniary gift.

You can choose any amount you like but it is worth remembering that if you do decide to leave this type of gift, it is important to review it from time to time as inflation can reduce its value.

Example

I give to Royal Mencap Society of 123 Golden Lane, London, EC1Y 0RT Charity Registration Number: 222377 the sum of £___ [amount in words] for its general purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other duly authorised officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my Executors.

Gift of a specific item

You can also choose to leave a particular item to Mencap, such as a piece of jewellery, an antique or even a property. A gift like this should be named in your Will.

Example

I give to Royal Mencap Society of 123 Golen Lane, London, EC1Y 0RT Charity Registration Number: 222377 [description of item(s)] absolutely for its general purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other duly authorised officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my Executors.
