Every year, Golden Lane Housing houses over 100 people with a learning disability in supported living arrangements of their choice, across England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Golden Lane Housing empowers people with a learning disability to make an informed decision about where and with whom they live, and works in partnership with more than 100 support providers to ensure they have access to the support they need to live independently in the community. Approximately a third of these individuals are supported by Mencap.
Golden Lane Housing believes people with a learning disability have the right to:
- live where and with whom they want
- build new lives from the secure base a Golden Lane Housing home provides
- receive and earn respect from the local community
- make real decisions about their own future
Every person supported by Golden Lane Housing is treated as an individual and on establishing where and with whom they wish to live, Golden Lane Housing will identify a housing solution that most closely aligns with this, rather than simply placing the person in a vacancy already in their housing portfolio.
Once a person's tenancy begins, in addition to the personal support provided by the designated support provider, Golden Lane Housing provides specialist landlord services that include an adaptations, repairs and maintenance service, housing-related benefits advice, and a 24-hour helpline.
Golden Lane Housing is an independent, registered charity and social housing provider, established by Mencap, almost 20 years ago.
It's one of the UK’s largest supported housing landlord for people with a learning disability.
Finding a home
Step one: request a needs assessment
Contact the local social services department of the person seeking a Golden Lane Housing home, and request a needs assessment
A needs assessment is a process for determining the amount of personal support a person requires, which can be funded by social services or through a person's own arrangements.
Before Golden Lane Housing can help a person find a home of their own, it is vital housing and personal support needs are formally addressed and a support package that takes account of future plans is put in place. Golden Lane Housing can offer guidance and support around the type of home that may be suitable.

Step two: apply for council housing
Make sure the person seeking a Golden Lane Housing home is on the local council house waiting list. While Golden Lane Housing recognises that joining a local council house waiting list will not necessarily result in being offered a council property, it is important to apply so councils understand the full extent of the needs of those in their area. This can also help identify if there are differences between Housing Benefit rates and actual housing costs.
