The government recommends that we do at least 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week.

This might mean going for a swim or playing a game of tennis but it could also mean going for a walk or a bike ride. Almost anything that gets you active will benefit your health. We focus on giving support to people who currently do nothing to doing something at least once a week.

Where to be active

There are many organisations that provide sport and physical activity for people with a learning disability in your local area. Below you will find links to some of these:

Mencap's Partner Groups

Some of Mencap's Partner Groups organise physical activity sessions or may know of physical activity in your local area. Find out more information and look up your local group.

County Sports Partnerships

County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) are nationally committed to ‘Improving Lives by Growing Grassroots Sport and Physical Activity.’ Most CSPs offer a disability programme which will be run by a disability officer. Find your local CSP and see what physical activities they have in your area.

National Governing Bodies

Across England there are many different national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) who have responsibility for managing their specific sport. They create opportunities and develop programmes for more people to play community sport. View the NGBs that are recognised by Sport England.

Special Olympics Great Britain

Special Olympics Great Britain offers year-round sport training and competition opportunities for all people with an intellectual (learning) disability. They have over 150 clubs across the UK and a handy club finder tool to find one that’s local to you.

Inclusive Gyms

The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) is a programme that supports gyms to become more welcoming and accessible for people with a disability. Find an inclusive gym local to you.
