In Control and Me

Mencap has been working in partnership with In Control to produce advice and information about self-directed support. The In Control and Me project has produced a series of factsheets based on the experiences of people who use social care services. They cover the steps to getting self-directed support as well as other issues, such as CRB checks. You can download easy read versions of the factsheets below.

Plain English versions of the factsheets are available on the In Control website. Audio versions will be avilable shortly.

Training opportunities

The In Control and Me project is also offering free training to organisations that provide advice or information to the public, including national helplines, local voluntary sector organisations, Mencap local groups and user led organisations.

As part of the project, Mencap's Learning Disability Helpline in England has also received this training. The helpline can provide advice and information about individual budgets and self-directed support in relation to learning disability issues. Find out more about the Learning Disability Helpline or contact them on 0808 808 1111.

Mencap and In Control

In Control started work in 2003 to change the social care system in England, as it did not put people in control of their own support, or life. In Control designed a new system - self-directed support. The government now wants all local authorities to change their systems to self-directed support.

Today In Control Partnerships is a social enterprise - a charity and an independent company. It works in partnership with citizens and government, and with charities and commercial companies. This partnership working approach enabled Mencap and In Control to:

  • bring together expertise in the fields of learning disability and self-directed support
  • to develop resources which are useful to everyone who uses social care services
  • make information and advice on self-directed support more widely available and accessible
  • support organisations who have received the training to disseminate the information internally, and among other local groups.
  • support individuals and families to understand the principles and model of self-directed support
