As a parent, you cannot be with your child all the time. Many parents have told Mencap of their concerns about how their son or daughter will be treated by staff at the services they attend, or in the homes where they live.
My son was bullied and the support provided by the care agency was totally unsuitable - they let him down badly.
It is always a good idea to visit any facilities your child will be using before they go, to meet the staff and find out what training and skills they have. Many local authorities also have an Adult Protection Co-ordinator, who should be able to tell you about local procedures for protecting vulnerable adults.
If you have concerns about the treatment your child is receiving, or if you think they have been abused, please contact Mencap Direct, which offers support and advice. You can call for free on 0808 808 1111 from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
