I love to write poems and stories. I get inspiration from the things I see and the people I know – like pylons, owls or friends who have passed away. I started to write lots of poems and stories at Tulips in 2008. Tulips is an arts and crafts project from Croydon Now, a Mencap service. It takes place every Friday at a church in Addiscombe.
I write about all kinds of things, like doctors and dentists, museums, Red Nose Day, Tower Bridge and Michael Jackson. I have collected all my work in a big folder, and one day I hope some of it gets published.
I like rhyming poems – so many of my poems are in rhyme. I get my ideas from everywhere, including memories and things that happened when I was younger. I went to St Andrews school in Caterham, and my teacher used to read out a poem about likes and dislikes. I can still remember some of the poem.
I walk to Tulips from my house and I also have my lunch there, at Cafe Now, a community cafe from Croydon Now. I live in a Mencap supported living house in Addiscombe with six others, and some of the people I live with come to Tulips and Cafe Now too.
I like to write about objects that have interesting and memorable shapes – like the BP logo shaped like a shield. I used to pass it on the way to school on the bus. I remember it because it stood out. It was lime green. I also like big gas holders like the one at Battersea Power Station, and cooling towers too. I love the way they rise out of the ground.
I especially like pylons, and have written about them lots. I have liked them since I was five, because of their shape and design. Last year someone told me there was a Pylon Appreciation Society, so I decided to join! They sent me a welcome pack including a badge and a newsletter.
I like to visit new places and get new ideas. This year I went to a guest house in Morecambe on holiday. It is one of my favourite places. Sometimes I think I would like to go and live there – but then I change my mind!
I have also been to France and seen the Eiffel Tower. I went up in the lift, but I did not go all the way to the top. This summer I am going to visit Buckingham Palace and also to an activity centre in Cranleigh. I am going to try rafting and abseiling!
