My name is Mahesh Somauroo. I’m 48 and I work as a waiter at Flemings Hotel, near Green Park in London. Flemings is a nice hotel – you could call it posh! So many different people come to the hotel. The staff are good and the work is nice.
I serve people at the breakfast buffets, I clean the tables and make coffee, cappuccinos and lattes. Sometimes, I help with serving sauces and putting food on the plates. I take the trays to the rooms, when people order food. Sometimes we get tips, but we don’t get tips all the time.
I get tired of the food. When I look at it, I can’t even eat it because I see the same food all the time. I have had enough – I bring my own food now.
I live in West Norwood in south London. I live in a house with my mum and two sisters. I’m waiting for a flat – I hope it won’t be so long now. It will be for me, on my own – I can’t live with other people because I am too clean and tidy!
My hobbies are snooker, pool, rock climbing, badminton, going to the cinema, swimming, and meeting people and having nice conversations. I like watching football. I like the World Cup. To be honest, because my dad and brother support Tottenham, I cheer when they score, but I haven’t really got a team.
I was born in Mauritius but I was brought up in London. Now I’m stuck here for good! It’s a good thing though, because I like living in London.
I went to Mauritius when I was a kid – I went for a holiday to see where I was born. I didn’t really want to come back because I was having such a good time – my mum had to make me come back. I am going back there next year. I need a good holiday – I haven’t had one in a long time. I am saving up.
Before Flemings, I was signing on and Mencap helped me – through the work choice programme – to get the job. Before that, I hadn’t been working. I used to work in the Tate Gallery, but after I left, I was unemployed for about eight months.
Working is completely different to staying at home. You are doing things and you get tired. I have a good day’s work and then I go out and have fun with friends or go home, have a bath and relax. I prefer working.
