In November, Mencap Cymru’s external affairs officer Dawn Gullis won the Understanding Disability Award under the professional category. The award is given by the Cardiff and Vale Parents Federation. Dawn was the first person with a learning disability to win under this section.

There has been much in the news about Winterbourne View where people with a learning disability were abused and bullied by eleven staff. They were kept in an assessment and treatment unit away from their families. This is not acceptable. It is shocking.

I remember several years ago going to my youngest niece’s school nativity play. I watched with delight as she sang her little heart out and proudly produced her little dance routine. Nativities can’t fail to tug the hearts of the audience with their huge amount of cuteness. This was no exception. I felt so proud of her and so delighted to have been asked to go to watch.
