In November, Mencap Cymru’s external affairs officer Dawn Gullis won the Understanding Disability Award under the professional category. The award is given by the Cardiff and Vale Parents Federation. Dawn was the first person with a learning disability to win under this section.

There has been much in the news about Winterbourne View where people with a learning disability were abused and bullied by eleven staff. They were kept in an assessment and treatment unit away from their families. This is not acceptable. It is shocking.

Jane Alltimes, Mencap's Senior campaigns and policy officer, was disappointed to see Rod Liddle’s column in The Sun today (‘Pretend disabled’ really are sick, 26.1.2012). Jane believes it is an unhelpful and misleading portrayal of disabled people and benefits claimants, when official figures show that disability benefit fraud is actually only around 0.3%.
