Disabled people can shape government policy

Tuesday 24 January 2012

Disabled people and their families and carers can help inform a new government disability strategy, by taking a Mencap survey

The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) has launched a consultation on the government’s strategy on disability equality.

It sets out areas for discussion based on three key principles: realising aspirations, individual control and changing attitudes and behaviours.

“The government is committed to enabling disabled people to fulfil their potential and have the opportunity to play a full role in their community,” said Minister for Disabled People Maria Miller. “Working with disabled people, I now want to ensure that there is a clear focus in place across government, so that the money that is available takes full account of disabled people.”

Responses to the consultation document will feed directly into the government’s strategy, which will be published in spring next year.

Mencap has launched two surveys – one for people with a learning disability and one for their families and carers – to find out what would improve their lives. The results of these surveys will then be submitted to the ODI, as part of the consultation.

The closing date for the Mencap surveys is 27 February, before the government consultation closes on 9 March.
