Friday 20 November 2009
Mencap voted Best Disability Charity by Parliamentarians Mencap's campaigns team is celebrating its success after being voted the best disability charity by MPs and peers at the ComRes Parliamentary Awards. The ceremony took place in London earlier this week.
Mencap's, the UK's leading learning disability charity, beat off competition from Leonard Cheshire Disability and Scope to scoop the top prize. The award was presented to Lord Rix, Mencap President, by Major Phil Packer, Fundraiser of the Year at the Pride of Britain Awards 2009.
Esther Foreman, Mencap campaigns manager said: "Mencap has worked hard to make sure the voices of people with a learning disability, their families and carers are heard in Parliament and we are delighted to have won this award."
Andrew Hawkins, ComRes chief executive said: "Mencap is clearly getting its Parliamentary campaigning right, and we were delighted to see the charity win this year having been shortlisted in 2008. MPs and Peers clearly value the quality of a charity's campaign work and regard Mencap as a major heavyweight when it comes to providing a voice for learning disability."
Mike Hancock CBE, MP for Portsmouth South Down, said: "Mencap show an ongoing commitment to the forgotten, to the people always left behind. They support not only those with disabilities, but also their families and carers, and they've stuck at it for 60 years. "
