Hello, I'm Caroline White

Name: Caroline White
Region: South West
First Name:
Caroline
Last name:
White

I'm mum of Seb, aged 4, who has Down’s syndrome. I live in Bath with my husband Simon, Seb, and his brother Dominic, who is 2 years old.

When Seb was born I was shocked to the core. Day by day the hurt began to lift as I fell in love with my boy and realised he was a person first and foremost and not just a syndrome. I want to give everyone a little window into our lives and help promote the understanding that there is nothing tragic about it and that 'different' isn't any less wonderful or even that 'different'. I'm passionate about raising awareness, particularly with new parents who are possibly finding the diagnosis difficult.

In Christmas 2012, after a plea from me on Facebook, my son Seb was invited to do a magazine shoot for UK High Street retailer M&S. His charm and charisma then earned him a place in the M&S Christmas TV ad. I also write a Facebook page Down's Syndrome - Raising Awareness and Shifting Attitudes which aims to raise further awareness by offering a light hearted account of our lives together.

I'm delighted and honoured to be working with Mencap to help continue to raise awareness of the condition and change perceptions and attitudes towards learning disability.

My recent blog posts
Sibling chivalry
My boys squabble just the same as any siblings, usually over Woody and Woody's hat - even though they have one each. Recently I have noticed something really magical between them. On a few occasions I have not been able to fully decipher what Seb is saying and Dominic has acted as his translator, almost getting frustrated at me for not...

A very special summer
We spent part of the gloriously sunny bank holiday weekend at Simon’s cousin - Jason Gardener’s family house. It has become a bit of an annual event over the last 5 years, bringing together other family members and friends, some we see often, some not so, and our collective kids – which seem to multiply and grow (obviously!)...

A mature and rational response
When we learned that Seb has Down’s Syndrome one of the things we read about time and time again in all the gumpf we were given was that he would have a weakened immune system - that he would be more susceptible to coughs, colds, flu, chest infections, ear infections and the such like. As you probably know, Seb is my first child. He is my...
Monkey
Every single morning, without fail and generally pre-6am, a little monkey bumps its way down the stairs on its bottom, finds its way into our room and wriggles its way into our bed. Very occasionally it doesn’t bother with our room and goes straight into its brother’s room and wakes him up too. (To clarify, Seb has the room in the...

The naughty sheep – Seb’s first nativity
I remember several years ago going to my youngest niece’s school nativity play. I watched with delight as she sang her little heart out and proudly produced her little dance routine. Nativities can’t fail to tug the hearts of the audience with their huge amount of cuteness. This was no exception. I felt so proud of her and so...
