Relationships

Robin L

Hi - my sister is in her late forties and is starting to get really down about the prospect of not finding a partner. She's had a number of relationships, most of which have ended up with a partner (some with, others without learning disabilities) abusing her trust,  treating her badly or even behaving violently towards her.

Here in East Yorkshire there aren't many clubs where she can meet people and the only local facility is a MIND one, where she has been abused and threatened in the past by people with other mental health issues. She is now too afraid to return there.

I'd be interested to know other people's experiences of trying to help a person with learning disabilities find romance and I'd also appreciate any tips/information on social clubs for people like my sister in the Yorkshire area.

 Thanks

HI Rolu, I hope you don't mind me replying to your post. There are a number of mencap groups in East Yorkshire that your sister could go to. Northalllerton & The Dales mencap can be contacted on 01609 778894, Bridlington & Driffield mencap on 01262 400453, and Scarborough mencap on 01723 374819. They all have various social groups for adults with a learning disability.

I hope this information is of use and let me know how you get on. Good luck!

Helen

Robin L

Hi Helenchown - thanks for the advice - they're a bit of a way for her but she might like to give them a try.

I'd still be interested in anyone else's comments re this subject. What are your experiences as a carer/family member as regards relationships for people with learning disabilities?
