The Royal Mencap Society today announced two new Vice Presidents of the charity, and a new Director of Fundraising. Lord Dafydd Wigley and Alderman Alan Yarrow will help promote Mencap’s work and learning disability issues within their own spheres of influence, whilst Richard Yorke will bring over 16 years of fundraising experience to the charity.

Today, Opus Energy presented learning disability charity Mencap with a cheque for £23,770 – the total amount raised by the significant fundraising efforts of Opus Energy employees over the past year. The business energy supplier exceeded their fundraising target by nearly £4,000.

Yesterday, NHS England published the first set of quarterly data prompted by the Winterbourne View Concordat aimed at getting better care for people with a learning disability and behaviour that challenges.

Today, the Children and Families Bill has gained Royal Assent*. Mencap has worked hard over the past year, with its sector partners in the Special Educational Consortium and Every Disabled Child Matters, to ensure the legislation is fit for purpose. But the charity is now calling for greater attention to be given to the Code of Practice which, in its current draft form, could undermine the potential success of the new legislation.
