A Mencap project for young people at risk of offending wins a Young Partners Award
Raising Your Game is a five-year project to help turn around the lives of young people with a learning disability or communication difficulty who have offended or may offend. It has been developed by Mencap, in partnership with Nacro and I CAN, and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
The project has been awarded a Young Partners Award 2011, in the national category, by the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS). This award recognises good practice in involving young people in decision-making processes, at a national level.
The NCYS were particularly impressed by the way Raising Your Game encouraged young people to directly shape the communication difficulty awareness training that it has developed for organisations and professionals within the criminal justice system.
Staff from the project – including young people with a learning disability or communication difficulty – picked up their award at a ceremony in London on Saturday 15 October 2011.
Mark Perks, Raising Your Game’s programme manager said: “For all the young people and staff involved, this award recognises the energy and hard work of the past two years.”
