Life through a lens: Snap! winners chosen

Monday 01 August 2011

The winners of the Snap! photo and film competition have been chosen

This July, a panel of judges met to choose the winners of Mencap’s Snap! competition.

Snap! is Mencap's annual photo and film competition, sponsored by FUJIFILM UK Ltd and The Sorrell Foundation. The 11 judges included journalist Kate Spicer, Lady Frances Sorrell, creative director Gary Harvey, two members of Mencap’s learning disability panel (Lorainne Bellamy and Dean Meuleman) and former Snap! winners John and Shauna Hogan.

John Hogan said: “I think it’s important that people with a learning disability judge Snap! as the entries and competition reflects life for them, so I was really pleased that Shauna was asked to be a judge.

"Judging was a huge responsibility, as you could tell that every person who entered had put time and effort into their entry. It was a long day but both Shauna and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Around 630 photos were entered in the competition. The judges chose two gold, two silver, two bronze and two highly commended winners for each of the four categories. In addition, four films were chosen from 48 entries to receive awards.

Stacey Foster won an award in the My Heroes category for 'True friendship' (pictured). Her entry reads: "This is my very special friend from the day centre we attend. Even though I can't speak it doesn't bother him and he makes me smile and he makes me laugh every time I see him."

All the awards will be presented at a ceremony at London’s Rich Mix arts centre on 13 September, and the winning photos will feature in an exhibition at the Rich Mix gallery at the beginning of October.
