Spellathon spelling apps prove to be a hit

Spellathon, Mencap’s spelling competition, was relaunched in November. Children, students and adults across the world can compete against the clock to spell as many words correctly as possible.
For the first time in its 18-year history, Spellathon is taking place online. Competitors raise money for every word spelled correctly and a global championship will take place in March.
Spellathon is set in a futuristic world, hosted by ‘The Professor’, who is voiced by Stephen Fry. Competitors can challenge him in a reverse spelling challenge in February.
Hazel McIlwraith, Mencap’s assistant director of fundraising, said: “Now, by applying online via laptops, mobiles, tablets and whiteboard technologies with state of the art 3D animation, we have the opportunity to take Spellathon to a global audience.”
Spellathon has already proved to be a great success with the public – the Spellathon app is the most downloaded educational app from website www.getjar.com and the second most downloaded word game for iPad.
