Mencap 'best disability charity'

Mencap wins award at ComRes Parliamentary Charity Awards

Mencap president Lord Rix with Major Phil PackerThe winners of this year's ComRes Parliamentary Charity Awards were announced at a House of Commons reception on Monday evening (16 November).

Charities were nominated across 10 categories by MPs and peers. They were asked by research group ComRes to name the charity in each category that had communicated best with them in 2009.

Mencap overcame competition from some of the UK's leading charities to win the best disability charity award.

Other awards were won by the RSPCA, Oxfam and the Gurkha Justice campaign.

More than 150 parliamentarians, charity representatives and corporate fundraisers attended the event. The awards were presented by political and charity personalities including Ed Balls MP, Ken Livingstone and Jonathan Aitken.

Esther Foreman, Mencap's campaigns and policy manager, said: "We are delighted to have won this award.

"Engaging and communicating effectively with MPs and peers plays a vital role in our campaigns calling for Changing Places toilets, improving the provision of social care and tackling disability hate crime."
