Helping young people reach their goals.
Profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)
People with PMLD have the right to be seen, heard, included, supported and equal. Mencap believes that:
-
the law must not restrict people's human right to dignity and inclusion
-
people with PMLD have the right to be seen, heard, included, supported and equal
-
the Mental Capacity Act must be used to support people with PMLD.
Mencap campaigns on many other issues that are important for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, including independent living, health and education. We are also a member of the PMLD Network. Find out more about the PMLD Network.
Postural care
The Postural Care Action Group has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of good postural care for thousands of people with multiple disabilities.
Mental capacity and consent
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 protects the rights of people who lack capacity to make their own decisions.
Moving and handling
People with PMLD are not being fully included in their communities because local authorities don't have good manual handling policies.
Representation
Because people with PMLD are often not seen and not heard it can be easy for people to forget about their needs.
