Digital Britain APPG

Author: Ismail Kaji

Posted: 23rd Aug 2011

This APPG was a joint meeting with three other APPG’S on Digital Britain.

Chaired By Rt Hon Anne Mc Guire MP and Baroness Campbell of Surbiton

I attended the APPG Meeting on Digital Britain which was about the importunacy of technology & the internet for people with a learning disability. There were some interesting discussions about how disabled people can get better access to new technologies.

This is important because people with a learning disability use technology everyday when there are looking for work, paying their bills, applying for benefits and doing lots more things.

People with a learning disability need access to these technologies so they can be included like any other person and to make it easy for them to understand and to communicate in different ways. For example, websites need to be accessible by using images and an easy read format.

There are also people with a learning disability who have profound and multiple learning disabilities who need to use special software so they can communicate with people.

I would like to see people with a learning disability more involved when designing web pages because they know what is best for them, and this would help to improve the lives of people with a learning disability and their families.
